Girls with Guts! : The Road to Breaking Barriers and Bashing Records by Debbie Gonzales - Review

My daughter 'A' has been quite observant while reading & exploring various books. She always highlights & brings up incidences of gender-stereotypes being mentioned in the books she reads and gets very upset. So, I decided to get her books which celebrates women and girls throughout ages. Women who did exactly what they were told not to do. One such title is this:

Girls with Guts! : The Road to Breaking Barriers and Bashing Records
by Debbie Gonzales
Illustrator Rebecca Gibbon

This book quotes examples of some really fantastic women athletes from the late 1800s up through the 1970s, sharing how women:

  • overcame obstacles.
  • defied society’s expectations.
  • refused to conform to unfair & biased rules.
  • navigated the government and legislation as a tool to gain civil rights.

Listing here some of the athletes mentioned in the book: Frances Willard, Senda Berenson Abbot, Eleanora Sears, Gertrude Ederle, Margaret Gisolo, Althea Gibson, and Donna de Varona.

Illustrations in the book are simple, to the point and perfectly compliments the narrative. Even though the book is addressed to girls, I strongly feel that it should be read to all children (6years old & above) irrespective.

Also, don't skip the timeline at the end of the book because there are additional athletes mentioned, an inspirational author’s note and an incredible bibliography.

Being a girl/woman did you ever defied societal expectations or questioned rules favoring a specific gender? Would love to hear from you in the comments !
