Elephant & Piggie Book Series by Mo Willems - Early Readers for 4 to 6 years old !

I always keep looking out for books that my daughter enjoys reading or being read to. This gives me an insight into which subjects interest her, what kind of stories and illustrations she enjoys more; especially the ones which make her laugh. There are quite a few humorous books which we came across while we kept exploring books in libraries, book stores, and other platforms. During one such book hunt at the community library, we bumped into this delightfully humourous Elephant and Piggie series written and illustrated by, Mo Willems. Mo Willems, is an Emmy award-winning writer for Sesame Street, author and illustrator of the Pigeon Series, and Knuffle Bunny too.

However, in today's post I will talk about only the Elephant and Piggie Series which has 25-books in all and is a great resource as an Early Reader.

Gerald the Elephant and Piggie the Pig are the two main characters in this series who are completely opposite to each other in their personalities. Gerald thinks and worries a lot, whereas Piggie is full of life and playful in her nature. Irrespective of their contrast temperament they get along very well as friends who care for each other and that's precisely the essence of this book series.

Going further, this series has also wonderfully dealt many challenges & situations which young children experience while growing up, like:
  • how to manage and deal with own feelings, when a friend makes a new friend?
  • is it wise to share things with others?
  • how to brighten up a friend who is sad?
  • how to support and standby your friend who is trying hard to accomplish something?
  • how to keep your personal space intact without hurting your friends feelings/emotions?

Coming to the age-appropriateness, this series has no age boundaries if you ask me. Though these books are ideal for 4 year olds who are getting started with independent reading but my 7 year old enjoyed it as much including me. She found Gerald and Piggie very funny and literally burst into uncontrollable laughter while reading each and every book from this series.

This series offers simple and immensely expressive illustrations which compliments the narrative remarkably. You are sure to fall in love with the charming illustration of each and every character wherein with mere hand movements and facial expressions the emotions of the character is communicated wonderfully.

Told entirely in big comic balloons, graphical conversation allows words to be understood as representing the speech/thoughts of each character in the story; with a repetitive use of familiar phrases. Piggie’s speech balloons are pink and Gerald’s are grey in colour, so it's very evident who is speaking, ruling out any sort of confusion in readers mind. Overall this series serves as a great tool for children trying to be independent readers. They would be able to enjoy the storyline with some great humor while learning to read.
